SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — An American senior citizen killed an alleged mugger with his bare hands, and his traveling companions aboard a tour bus fended off two other assailants in the Atlantic coast city of Limon, police said.

A retired member of the U.S. military aged about 70 put suspect Warner Segura in a head lock and broke his clavicle after the 20-year-old and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus, Luis Hernandez, the police chief of Limon, 80 miles east of San Jose, said Thursday. Segura was later declared dead, apparently from asphyxiation.

The two other men fled when the 12 senior citizens started defending themselves during the Wednesday attack. Afterward, the tourists drove Segura to the Red Cross where he was declared dead. The Red Cross also treated one of the tourists for an anxiety attack, Hernandez said.

The tourists left on their Carnival cruise ship after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press any charges against them.

"They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up," he said.

Hernandez said Segura had previous charges against him for assaults.

n a media statement, Miami, Fla.-based Carnival Cruise Lines said the Wednesday incident occurred during an outing at a Limon beach which a group of a dozen passengers had arranged on their own.

"According to witnesses, while sightseeing at a local beach, the group of guests were approached by three assailants, one of whom was armed," the statement said.

"The victims struggled with the armed perpetrator, and were able to disarm him. During this process, the gunman's two accomplices fled the scene. In the course of disarming and restraining the assailant, he died from apparent asphyxiation."

Neither the Costa Rican police nor Carnival identified the man involved in the struggle with the mugger.

The cruise line said the guests were questioned by local law enforcement and then returned to the ship. The ship's departure from Limon was slightly delayed to await their return.

"All of the guests involved, who had booked the cruise together as a group, have opted to continue with their vacation plans. Carnival is providing full support and assistance to the guests," according to the statement.

The ship, The Carnival Liberty, continued on its scheduled itinerary, with a port call scheduled in Colon, Panama.

There's a new forum in town boys.....

And its name is Piper

Yep The guys over at Piper systems, not being content with putting together a great blog with outstanding information on African martial traditions (Frankly, it is THE PLACE to go for real and useful information on South African martial arts) Have started a forum.

This forum will give people to interact with the guys who, in my (admittedly not) humble opinion, have the most valuable and accurate information going (I really want to say "the only people worth talking to", but that would be rude) on Cape style knife fighting.

It will be nice to have a place where there are round table discussions that are free of the sort of agendas that might be found on forums where there might be a commercial interest in not allowing information to be freely disseminated.

Speaking of which, as some of you know, I am traveling at the moment and have been for a week or so.

Right now I am in Seattle after spending the last week in Portland.

While in Portland I had a chance to review the video and see the methods of practice of one group who had been highly critical of The guys from Cape Town on one of the forums, claiming that Piper was no different than what they were doing and that the parts that might be different would not really work.

Well, they were wrong.

I am not saying that what this particular group offers is bad, it is just nothing like Cape style knife fighting. It is really too bad because if this group was not so threatened by what the seemed to think was "competition" they could have gotten some stuff that would have improved their skills.

Lloyd has just put some new video clips up on the Piper website. Take a look and judge for yourself. Of particular interest is Nigel demonstrating his knife passing.

The conventional wisdom here in the States is that you can't effectively pass a knife in a fight. Well, like the bumble bee, no one told Nigel, so he does it without any problems at all.

It is a little hard to follow, because, not to put too fine a point on it, Nigel is faster than a humming bird on crack, but you will notice that his knife moves from one hand to the other without effort. Now I have had the privilege of seeing a few clips of these guys sparring and they pull off the passes against resistant opponents just fine.

So take a look at the clips, join the forum, cultivate an opewn mind and ask the right questions and you will be very happy you did.

The guys at Piper are, as we say where I come from, "just plain folks". They don't have any of the arrogent pretentions that one can sometimes find in the martial arts world, and they are, in my experence, more than willing to share what they know.

So check it out and I'll see you on the forum.
