Do You Remember When the Taliban Blew Up the Buddha Statues?

And how horrified everyone was that precious treasures of human history were being destroyed because of religious bigotry?

Well, it's still going on.

Only this time it's Christians who are wiping out competing symbols.

Yes, the headlines tell us "Christian zealots destroy ancient Arctic petroglyphs". This shouldn't surprise us. Religion can be modeled as a Meme complex. That is to say a group of ideas that have some of the qualities of a living organism such as a virus.

All Religions (as I have defined them in the previous posts) attempt to limit one's access to information, this is also true of political groups, which after all just another form of "religion".

Any group who's primary purpose is control cannot afford to have the individuals under control be able to access information freely. If that were to happen it is just possible that the members of the controlled group might just develop the unfortunate disease of Thinking for Themselves.

Once you get people thinking their own thoughts rather than just regurgitating the memetic material of the group, and then the next thing you know the group starts losing power and control.

This is why religious and political groups have such heavy penalties for "heresy".

Of course when the Meme Complex that controls your thinking tells you that a particular bit of information is "bad" it seems reasonable, while the negative reaction a competing meme complex has about the information that you offer seems unreasonable.

It's Always the Robot

Without self knowledge, without understanding the working and functions of his machine, man cannot be free, he cannot govern himself and he will always remain a slave.
George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff

The whole commerce between master and slave is a perpetual exercise of the most boisterous passions, the most unremitting despotism on the one part, and degrading submissions on the other. Our children see this, and learn to imitate it.
Thomas Jefferson

We are sheep kept to provide wool for our masters who feed us and keep us as slaves of illusion. But we have a chance of escape and our masters are anxious to help us, but we like being sheep. It is comfortable.
George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff

"Should the human race not be extinguished by a nuclear war it will degenerate into a flock of stupid, dumb creatures under the tyranny of dictators who rule them with the help of machines and electronic computers. This is no prophecy, just a nightmare." -- Max Born (Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, November 1965)

"There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life." -- Frank Zappa

If you've ever look at ancient Egyptian bas reliefs, you'll see the faces of many figures chipped away. This was also done over the ages by Christians (who thought they were idols) and perhaps by Muslims too.

Who was it who said "Don't adopt opinions. Develop them"?

What makes this one worse is that it is probably locals who did it.
